Horseback Riding Vacations at the Home Ranch

For over 30 years, The Home Ranch has welcomed families and equestrian travelers of all ages and skill levels to enjoy trail riding along the edge of the western continental divide. Our guests have access to acres and acres of National Forest right out our back door.  We have so many choices of trails and terrains, a week isn’t enough time to see them all.

If you already ride, you’ll love the variety of horses and trails. If you’re a novice, you’ll learn to ride from our experienced Team of Wranglers headed up by Ranch Operations Manager, Michael Moon.

Guests say the Home Ranch program is unique because of our Riding Orientation.  First-time riders will learn much more than just surface knowledge, it’s unique in comparison to other ranches. Advanced riders tell us they learned something new – wranglers keep up on what’s happening in the horse trainer world.

If trail riding isn’t quite your calling, we offer a multitude of lessons, workshops and clinics including working cattle, drill team, and horsemanship workshops. If the children also want something more out of their horse experience, they can join our Junior Wrangler ProgramFor riders who like clinics with experts in the fields, The Home Ranch offers multiple opportunities.  Curt and Tammi Pate, established trainers, offer Horsemanship Clinics as well as Yoga/Horse Clinics in late summer and fall.

“Cattle work, trail rides, horsemanship clinics, great meals, and comfortable cabins in the Colorado Mountains- Horseback riding vacations don’t get any better than this.” –Western Horseman

Our Wranglers

Our guests say our wranglers really enhance the riding experience at The Home Ranch. Director of Ranch Operations, Michael Moon, builds a team of diverse wranglers each season. Our wranglers have varied backgrounds – hunter jumpers, dressage riders, ropers, barrel racers, as well as ranch-raised cowboys and cowgirls.  They offer a broad perspective when it comes to riding and teaching. Rest assured, if you have only ridden English in the past, odds are we have a wrangler with the same prior experience.

While our wranglers are capable, experienced, and most importantly, fun to be around, they have the credentials.  All are certified in the Dude Ranch Association Safety Program as well as CPR and First-Aid.

Working Cattle

Another activity well loved by our returning guests is the Friday morning Cattle Competition.  Some dude ranches offer cattle activities, working cattle at The Home Ranch is different. It’s similar to team penning, but we put our own spin on it.  We like to call it Home Ranch Stockmanship.

We teach you to to move cattle efficiently via effective communication with your horse.  It’s a form of horsemanship with cattle largely overlooked, and widely misunderstood. Many would think that the faster you can move on horseback, the better. The truth is, the faster you go, the less predictable the cattle become. Just like with horsemanship, it is one of the ‘less is more’ scenarios.  But learning to do it right is as thrilling as any other type of ‘Ranch Rodeo’. For guests that want to learn more about stockmanship, check out our fall Cattle Round-Up week.

Private Lessons

If you prefer private lessons, that can be arranged with some advance notice.  If you want to build your skills in a particular area, please don’t hesitate to ask.  Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor arena or personal time out on the trail, we’re confident that with a private lesson you will be more comfortable in the saddle in no time.

The Home Ranch Herd

One of the main attractions of The Home Ranch is our incredible herd of over 75 happy, healthy horses.  We can find a match for you whether you’re a first time rider or an experienced horse rider or even horse owner.   The goal is to make your experience unforgettable. Having a herd this large really gives us the freedom and opportunity to meet a variety of different experience levels and to give riders a chance to experience different breeds.

Some of the breeds of horses you’ll meet at the Home Ranch:

  • American Quarter Horses
  • American Paint Horses
  • Appaloosas
  • Thoroughbreds
  • Missouri Fox Trotters
  • Canadian Sport Horses
  • Half-Drafts
  • Percherons

But why are our horses in particular so great? First and foremost, they know their jobs and they do them well. They’re in great shape and can carry you easily to breathtaking views of the Zirkel Mountain range.  Our horseback riding program is special in that we give our guests opportunity to trot and lope, and our horses are happy to oblige. Many of our guests learn to trot and lope here during their stay, and our horses are excellent teachers.
