Why We Work at the Home Ranch

Farm to Table at The Home Ranch

Growing Organic Allison Mecklenburg and her Horticulture Team have a full time job with the Home Ranch farm to table program.  A lot of the organic vegetables guests see on their plate come from the greenhouse or garden beds on the property.  Home Ranch has been doing this since before it was cool. Allison says, "I am SO passionate about growing food! And especially organic food.  I come unglued when I notice that a plant has grown to the point of fruiting without me noticing. It is hands down the most important and exciting part of my life to watch all of this unfold. I have grown food as a hobby for many years, and now to have it as my vocation and career (corny as it may sound) is a dream come true." We asked her some questions about her unique occupation. What it’s like to grow plants in [...]

Kari Forseth ~ Wrangler

It’s time for us to introduce you to some of the amazing staff that we have at the ranch this summer.  First up is Kari Froseth who is one of our wranglers.  I asked Kari to tell everyone how she found herself at The Home Ranch this summer and what her favorite part of the ranch is, so far.  Here is what she wrote:   Kari & Stetson out doing some trail exploring Who would have thought a girl from the outskirts of Milwaukee, Wisconsin would find her way to the mountains of Colorado to work with horses and give guests of The Home Ranch an unforgettable experience. Nearly 1,200 miles from home and here I am; a cowgirl at heart. Growing up I’ve never owned my own horse, but was blessed to have a mom to drive me back and forth to lessons every week. From a young age [...]

Adele Carlson: Colorado Farm To Table Pioneer

This week’s profile in “Why We Work at The Home Ranch” is our master gardener Adele Carson. A cattle rancher and pillar of the local Clark community for over 30 years, Adele has lived, worked, and raised her family in the Elk River Valley. She and her husband Doug also operate one of the cornerstones of the Home Ranch farm to table operation: our sister company, the Sand Mountain Cattle Company. Although Adele has been associated with the Stranahan family and the Home Ranch for many years, she was hired in 2011 as our Master Gardener. Right away, she started to layout the logistics for the development of Clyde’s farm. Under Adele’s leadership and green thumb, the ranch has added our new greenhouse, expanded the kitchen garden, and helped develop the Ranch’s 5-year plan for the farm which envisions an entire 2.5 acres growing either flowers or vegetables. When I [...]

Shea Wright ~ California Girl With A Colorado Dude Ranch Soul

Shea Wright is one of our housekeepers - and one of the great “behind the scenes” people that make our Colorado dude ranch run. Guests experience her perfectly made beds, and the cookies and cheeses she stocks in guest rooms, but our staff loves her because she is full of energy and fun - and she and Maggie do an amazing job of keeping their housekeeping team going during the dog days of summer (and the winter.)  Shea came to The Home Ranch last winter and decided to come back for another season. She came here to experience a real Western dude ranch, but our “town” of Clark stole her heart.  (That said, Shea is a California girl, loves Disneyland, and anything to do with Disney. She tries to go back as much as she can.) Before coming to The Home Ranch, she’d traveled and worked in the service and [...]

Why We Work at The Home Ranch-Douglas

This week’s “Why We Work at The Home Ranch,” is more of “Why did you come back to The Home Ranch?” Douglas Short is our Pastry Chef.  Douglas worked for The Home Ranch back in 2006 and decided he was ready for a change and wanted to come back to the Ranch. Douglas called Chef Clyde at just the right time – our then current pastry chef was taking on a new adventure and the search was on for someone to fill her shoes. Douglas was born in Wisconsin, but moved to Oxford, England at the age of 3. He went to Oxford & Cherwell Valley College to get his Culinary Arts degree.  When he is not in the kitchen he is out fly-fishing. Even as young boy he would go fishing on the Cherwell River after school. He also likes to hike, play table tennis (you can find he and [...]

Why We Work at The Home Ranch- Mattie

Mattie Bork is this week’s Why You Work at The Home Ranch post. Mattie came this summer to be our hiking guide.   Mattie grew up in Sioux Fall and earned a degree in Business Administration from University Wyoming. When Mattie is not working she is spending Mattie enjoying a hike with Berkley time with her new nephew and family. You might also notice her outside the ranch with her dog Berkley who loves to go hiking with her. She also enjoys anything outdoors (especially involving water), reading, crafts, scuba diving, and traveling. Before coming to the ranch, Mattie was teaching English to 8-11th graders in a public secondary school for a semester in Thailand.   I asked Mattie, “Why do you work at The Home Ranch?” “Because of its tight nit community, close to family and spend days in nature,” she said.   Mattie so far has [...]

Why We Work at The Home Ranch- Brooke

This week in our ‘why we work at The Home Ranch’ we are featuring Brooke Klein our head wrangler. When you come to the ranch this summer and take a ride with Brooke make sure to ask about any of her hobbies or her last season in Greece. On top of her talents with horses she is also a writer. I asked Brooke, “Why she works at The Home Ranch?” She wrote a piece of why she picked the ranch and we are so glad she did.   Brooke out on the trails at the Ranch For as long as I can remember my life has always been intertwined with horses. I started riding at the age of five and it has continued to be a life long passion. Almost four years ago, my partner, John, and I left the beautiful Pacific Northwest coastline we called home to [...]

Why We Work at The Home Ranch- Andrea

So the tables have turned, and since Andrea has been asking, and will continue to ask, staff “Why do you work at the Home Ranch?” I realized she should introduce herself and I also wanted to know why she choose to apply at the ranch this winter. She has been a great addition to our team and is looking forward to her first summer at the ranch. Here is a little bit about Andrea, how she found our Colorado Dude Ranch and why she has decided to stick around! I’m looking forward to another amazing season here at the ranch and can’t wait to meet new faces and reconnect with past guests. ~ Selina   Snowshoeing Home Mountain I am originally from Nebraska and grew up on a cattle and corn farm.
