Poncho The Home Ranch Burro Celebrated 35 Years

Poncho the Home Ranch Burro 35th Birthday A birthday party for a burro?  Seriously?  Yes, Poncho the burro is usually the first critter you see when you drive into The Home Ranch.  He has the run of the place and he's a favorite, even though he is a bit like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. He's been acting as gatekeeper and welcome wagon to Home Ranch guests for years.  On August 26th we helped him celebrate his 35th birthday.  Ranch Manager and Wrangler, Michael Moon, even wrote a song in honor of the occasion.  Poncho wasn't totally thrilled with his birthday hat but he decided his Birthday Carrot Cake was alright. Poncho's buddy and horse companion Fuzzy, all his favorite wranglers guests and staffed joined the party at The Home Ranch campfire.  Poncho doesn't usually like a fuss but he was cooperative.  He usually likes his crowd limited to one or [...]

Three Reasons to Visit The Home Ranch

A couple of weeks ago we hosted two weeks with The Farm as the theme of the week. If you've ever been to The Home Ranch, then you know what a special place it is and how it fosters friendships with new people. I had the opportunity to get to know Scott and Karen Hudson during their short stay here. Scott had asked if there was anything he could do to promote the ranch, I asked him to write a guest blog about their time at the ranch. The following is what he sent me earlier this week. I can't wait to see them again next year. Selina I don’t usually do this, but after last week’s stay at the Home Ranch I felt I needed to again thank you - and let the world know exactly how amazing this special place is. I’ve been to many Relais & Chateaux properties, and [...]

Off Ranch Adventures-Rock Climbing

A few of our Colorado Dude Ranch Staff and I went Rock Climbing with Rocky Mountain Ventures (our Rock Climbing outfitter).  Each Wednesday morning in the summer, we offer a shorter climb and then if there’s enough interest guests will have the opportunity to climb again on Friday. The climb on Friday has a higher face and is longer hike in.  We were able to test out the Friday climb. Like before make sure to ask if you have any questions, because now I can answer them!   After a short but beautiful drive along the Elk River we arrived at the trailhead. It is a short 15 – 20 minute hike through a beautiful Aspen grove, home to some of the largest Aspens I have ever seen. Once you get to the rock, the view is almost 180 degrees of the Routt National Forest looking west. Patrick, one of [...]

Off Ranch Adventures- River Kayaking

Over the next couple weeks I (Andrea) will be writing about my experiences doing activities around the ranch and with our outfitters. I get asked daily about “What’s it like to go, do, ride, or float?” I have never been able to answer the questions personally, but rather by other staff recommendations and experiences. Now, I will not only be able to help you (the guest) decide on and book activities, but I will be able to share my experience in each activity and a little about the guides you will have.   On a beautiful warm afternoon I headed out with five other staff members to become a true Steamboat’er by  kayaking the Yampa River. Most of us had been kayaking before, but never river kayaking a “real” river. The Home Ranch works with Mountain Sports Kayak School. Our guides were Barry, the owner, and Julie. Note: Because it’s [...]
