When the legendary fence post burying snow of North Routt county covers the Elk River Valley in powder, our Colorado dude ranch transforms into one of the most beautiful cross country ski resorts in Colorado, with private daily shuttles from our lodge to the slopes at Steamboat Ski Area.
We convert our horseback riding trails into 30km of expertly groomed cross country skiing trails and we welcome cross country skiers, skate skiers, snowshoers, backcountry skiers, and powderhounds to one of the most unique ski vacations in the West.
Each day our ski guides will visit with you to help plan your day. Your day could include helping Brady feed our herd of over 100 horses with the sleigh, a snowshoe up Home Mountain for an awe inspiring view of the Elk River valley, a cross country ski over to Llamasary, a quick skate ski around Aspen Arches, a hair raising trip down the tubing hill or reading a book by the fire. Most guests find themselves going out for another ski to make room for the next meal that Chef Clyde Nelson and his staff are preparing.
For those of you who would prefer downhill skiing at the nearby Steamboat Ski Resort, we offer a complimentary shuttle to and from the base each day. We will even pack you a lunch before you head out.
We can also arrange a half day tour with local outfitters for fly fishing on the Yampa River, driving your own team of dogs, or speeding across an open meadow on a snowmobile. All of these are very popular and fill up quickly. We encourage you to let Selina or Johnny know prior to your arrival that you would be interested in any of these activities.
Two of the most popular times at The Home Ranch during the winter are Christmas and New Year's. This is a time when many families, couples and groups return to celebrate this special time of year in our winter wonderland. In addition to daily activities and evening entertainment, we also remember that this time of year is about spending time with people you care about. For our staff that means seeing familiar faces from years past. For our guests, that means spending time with their loved ones and getting to reconnect with our staff. During the holiday season, we ask for a five night stay.
Did you know that Steamboat Springs Colorado has produced over 70 winter Olympians and the 2010 Nordic Combined Silver Medal Team? During late February and March we have many families join us for a ski vacation combining cross country skiing, winter horseback riding, downhill skiing at Steamboat Ski Resort and snowshoeing. This is a great chance to introduce your family to the life long sport of Nordic skiing and reconnect with each other before summer arrives.
