Why We Work at The Home Ranch-Mark

Learning from Andy, Guests will often ask staff how they found out about The Home Ranch and why they chose it over other dude ranches.

Mark Colvin is one of our behind the scenes managers.  He is not only the ‘numbers man’, but also the Director of Human Resources.  Mark joined The Home Ranch team mid summer in 2012.  In his free time he is on the golf course or shredding the slopes on his snowboard. He is an elder at his church in Denver and volunteers at The Gathering Place, Denver’s largest day-shelter for homeless women and children.  He is also Chairman of Development in Gardening ( www.reaplifedig.org) and has been to Africa twice to help with planting gardens and working with marginalized peoples impacted by HIV/AIDS.

Mark grew up in Texas where he graduated from Baylor University with an accounting degree. He has worked for large and small accounting firms and businesses.  For over 10 years Mark led close to 500 high school teenagers on a weeklong wilderness adventure in the majestic San Juan Mountain range of Southwestern Colorado. Having nearly completed his goal of ascending Colorado “14ers”, Mark has found the challenge of working at The Home Ranch to be equally rewarding.

We asked Mark the question, “Why do you work at The Home Ranch?” Mark said, “ I wanted to work in the mountains after 17 years in Denver, The Home Ranch gave me that opportunity.  I knew after volunteering for 10 years at the youth ranch and enjoying the atmosphere, that I would enjoy working here. It was a marriage of personal and professional development; in an outdoor setting that I get to provide accounting and admin services without feeling like it.”

You might see him this summer either on his bike or out with his dogs Zeke and Finn, who are German short-hair pointers.  His responsibilities at the ranch allow him to spend time in both Clark and Denver.  If you have the opportunity to meet Mark, make sure to ask him about good biking trails or what his favorite wine is on our current wine list – It seems to be always evolving. But we’ll learn more about that when we introduce you to Chef Craig.
